CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A pair of defending state champions will take leads into the final day of the WVSSAC State Track & Field Championships.
In Class AAAA, last year’s winners from Morgantown take a four-point advantage into Saturday. The Mohigans scored 34.5 points on Day 1. Harlyn Nelson had the lone event victory for MHS. She cleared 11 feet to win the pole vault. Parkersburg stands second. Huntington is third with 30 points. The Highlanders won the shuttle hurdle relay.
Other Class AAAA winners on Day 1 are the Hurricane 4×800 meter relay team, Musselman’s Sadie Yates won the 3200 meter run, Riverside’s Jada Ward took the high jump and Wheeling Park’s Molly Brinker won the long jump.
In Class AAA, Bridgeport scored 33 points and they’ll take a five-point lead into Saturday. Transgender athlete Becky Pepper-Jackson won the shot put with a personal best throw of 38 feet, 11.75 inches. Also, Haydn Henderson won the long jump.
Herbert Hoover stands second and they won two events on Day 1. Maysen Fletcher won the 3200 meter run by 43 seconds in a time of 10:17.13. Also, Azaziah Smith won the high jump.
Other Class AAA winners on Day 1 are the Elkins 4×800 meter relay team and the Greenbrier East shuttle hurdle relay team.
Defending Class AA champion Williamstown has the largest lead in any classification entering Day 2. The Yellowjackets won two of the five events on Friday. The first victory was earned by the 4×800 meter relay team and Reagan Corbett followed up with a victory in the discus. Williamstown scored 42 points and they lead Buffalo by 18 points. The Bison earned a win from Willow Rowe in the shot put.
Other Class AA winners on Day 1 are the Weir shuttle hurdle relay team and Frankfort’s Bailey Ferguson in the 3200 meter run.
And finally in Class A, St. Marys scored 35 points to take an 8-point lead into Day 2. The Blue Devils earned a 1-2 finish in the pole vault with Avry Bennett winning in a height of 10 feet, 3 inches. Sidni Gerlach finished as runner-up. Charleston Catholic stands second through the five events on Friday. Bella Boggs cruised to victory in the 3200 meter run.
Other event winners in Class A are Natalie Henger of Ritchie County in the discus, Wahama in the shuttle hurdle relay and Wheeling Central Catholic in the 4×800 meter relay.
