HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Playing in the final game of a decorated prep career, Frankfort’s Lanson Orndorf made sure his fellow seniors could bring another state championship trophy back to Short Gap. Orndorf posted his second complete game victory of the state tournament as the No. 2 Falcons defeated No. 4 Logan, 5-2 in the Class AA title game.
After defeating Lincoln, 6-1 in the quarterfinal round on Monday, Orndorf, a University of Charleston signee, was equally as impressive against the Wildcats. He allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters while walking just two.
“He’s our dude. It is as simple as that. He does it all year long. His ERA is under 1 for a reason,” said Frankfort head coach Matt Miller. “The kid has been a dog. I remember the day he was born. He has been with us his whole life. He has been our bat boy since he was four years old. To have him win that is special.”
“I have a picture of myself holding the fence and I am literally shorter than a bat. It has been my whole life,” Orndorf said.
“Just trusting my defense and trusting the off-speed. We knew they were patient and they were good hitters. I had to get ahead early with the fastball and the work in the off-speed.”
Logan (23-13) built a 2-0 lead by scoring a run in the second and third innings. Ivan Miller’s squeeze bunt brought Tanner Akers home in the second and the Wildcats added another run on a fielding error in the third inning.
However, the Falcons (27-7) scored five runs in the next three innings to take the lead. A Jaxon Hare sacrifice fly in the third inning cut the FHS deficit in half at 2-1. In the fourth, the Falcons drove in runs in three consecutive at bats with a Carson Durst single, a Braeden Laffey sacrifice fly and a triple from Orndorf.

Frankfort has won two of the last three state championships in Class AA. They also won the title in 1988.
“I am just super-proud of our guys. They played so hard. They worked so hard all winter long, putting in the weight room, putting it into the hitting facility. The time they put in is unbelievable. All credit to our kids, Miller said.
“This should have been three because we should have been in Class AA last year.”
