JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. –The Jackson County Commission is making repairs to their courthouse ahead of the July 4th celebration in Ripley.
Commissioner Steve Westfall was on MetroNews affiliate WMOV Radio in Ravenswood to talk about everything they’ve done to the courthouse to get it ready.
He said they were able to get the roof replaced and hire a contractor to come in and replaster some of the courtroom walls because they were damaged.
Westfall also said they were able to get the clock on the outside working again.
“People have noticed the clock works now at the courthouse, we got a company from Huntington, third generation clock company come and got the courthouse close to work again,” he said.
He mentioned that the clock had been out of commission for years, but it’s hard to tell for how long.
“I don’t know how long it hasn’t worked, it was right twice a day, five after three, twice a day, but now it works,” Westfall said. “It was great to meet those people, like I said third generation clock people, and they were great to work with.”
Ripley is set to hold its “America’s Largest Small-Town Independence Day” celebration July 1-5, with parades, musical entertainment, family activities, and fireworks as they help America celebrate 250 years.
Westfall said the commission wanted to ensure the courthouse looked presentable during their celebration this year.
“All three commissioners agreed we wanted to get it looking great for Fourth of July, 250 anniversaries of the United States, and it will be a big Fourth of July celebration on the courthouse lawn in Ripley that day,” he said.
