Charleston man previously tied to 2022 shooting death arrested for armed robbery

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man previously charged in a 2022 shooting death is in custody for allegedly robbing a Go-Mart gas station Sunday night.

Shavan Collins (WVRJA)

Authorities said Shavan Collins, 39, of Charleston, was arrested and charged with robbing the Go-Mart on Bigley Avenue at around 8:15 p.m. Collins is accused of threatening to kill the gas station workers if they did not comply with his demands for money, then leaving the scene on a bike.

Officers said they identified Collins through surveillance footage because of the unique tattoos on his body.

Collins was originally charged with first-degree murder in the August 2022 shooting death of Dontaze Mosley, 34, on Charleston’s West Side. Mosley was gunned down in the front yard of a home on Frame Street.

Collins entered a Kennedy Plea to a lesser offense in September 2024 after Kanawha County prosecutors dropped the murder charge against him.

In September 2024, Kanawha County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Alan Nichols told Kanawha County Circuit Judge Tera Salango the state didn’t have the evidence it needed for a conviction.

“We have a firearm and a victim and a defendant, but we do not have witnesses to tell us how those all fit together here to present to a jury,” Nichols said.

Additionally, Collins — later identified by his alias “Bang” — was named in a 2011 five-count indictment for attempted murder, malicious wounding and wanton endangerment. This was in connection to a June 2011 shooting in Charleston. In that case, Collins pleaded guilty to malicious wounding.

Collins is being held in the South Central Regional Jail on $25,000 cash-only bail for the Go-Mart robbery charge.
