NWS confirms more tornadoes in the mountains of eastern West Virginia

FRANKLIN, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has confirmed there were two tornadoes which touched down Tuesday in Pendleton County.

Inspection teams from the NWS Bureau in Sterling, Va. visited the county to take a look at the aftermath of the storms.

The first tornado was east of Franklin on a line to the Fort Seybert area of the county. The path ran from Kiser Gap Rd, across Troublesome Valley, across Corner Road, Sweedlin Valley Rd, and continued a short distance across the state line into Rockingham County, VA.

Tornado number two was a smaller storm southeast of Seneca Rocks and did all of its damage on a single piece of property.

Some structures were damaged by the storms, but the bulk of the damage involved twisted and uprooted trees. One of those trees fell across a roadway onto the hood of a vehicle. The driver and passenger were not injured.

There was also a third tornado confirmed in Hampshire County. The NWS report concludes:

“Multidirectional tree damage, at least dozens of trees. Large trees uprooted, large limbs snapped on the 5100 block of route 23/3 near High View WV, consistent with rotation signature noted on NWS weather radar. Tracked east over the ridge and across the state line into Virginia where it created similar tree damage in northern Wilde Acres, VA.”

The National Weather Service in Charleston earlier this week confirmed two tornadoes touched down that same day on the other side of the state in Pleasants County. Those storms were EF-2 and caused significant damage to homes and structures along a ridgetop in the St. Mary’s and Belmont communities of Pleasants County.
