Straight line winds blamed for Wayne County damage

EAST LYNN, W.Va. — The National Weather Service has determined a series of high winds which passed through Wayne County this week were microbursts and straight line winds. Inspectors said the damage was not caused by a tornado. However the damage to a stand of trees was severe.

“Just because it wasn’t a tornado doesn’t mean it’s not deadly. A straight line wind can be up to 100 miles an hour,” said Wayne County Emergency Management Director B.J. Willis.

The storm struck Tuesday evening in the East Lynn area. Fortunately, there weren’t a lot of homes in the area where the storm hit. The incident was very near the area where Wayne, Lincoln, and Cabell County converge.

“Only one home was hit by a tree and nobody was hurt. It appears to be minor damage. Mostly it was just woodlands, ” said Willis.

Willis said there was a swath of trees on private property about 1600 feet long where the tops of the trees were sheered off. The official determination of the weather service was more than one micro-burst.
