ELKVIEW, W.Va. — Five different Huskies found the end zone as Herbert Hoover extended their home field supremacy and opened the season with a 49-3 win over Fairmont Senior.
The Huskies have not lost at Husky Field since the school opened in the 2023 season.
“Our guys played hard. This team, when you play an opponent that good early, I think there is urgency in how we practice and how you prepare,” said Herbert Hoover head coach Joey Fields.
“We needed confidence. We played didn’t run the ball as well as we wanted to in the scrimmages. Maybe that was a little bit our opponents. I am proud of our guys. We started down two linemen. That’s the name of the game. Guys stepped up. I am super, super-proud of those guys up front.”
Army commit David Robinson opened the scoring on Hoover’s first drive of the game with a 16-yard touchdown tote. After the Polar Bears responded with a 26-yard field goal from Ben Smith, Robinson scored his second touchdown on a 14-yard run, making the Husky lead 15-3.
Late in the half, Takye Porter followed with a 43-yard touchdown run and Peyton Grigsby found Turay Rush on a 57-yard scoring strike to give Hoover a 29-3 halftime lead. The Huskies scored on each of their four first-half possessions.
“I told these guys that the biggest thing is cheering on your teammates. It is going to be your night, maybe it is his night. That’s a team. A lot of these guys came here and are playing now and they have to have some self-sacrifice for us to play in that final game. That’s the goal. But it is easier said than done.”
In the third quarter, Grigsby sprinted free into the end zone on a 40-yard touchdown run, giving Hoover a 35-3 lead. The Huskies added a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Rush scored a second time on a 25-yard interception return.
“He can make plays. He can be the best player on offense. He’s explosive. He can do the same thing on defense and guard their best receiver. We’ve got a bunch of guys in that locker room that can.”
Lance Williams capped the scoring on a 7-yard run with 15 seconds left.
“I felt like we won the line of scrimmage at times with less numbers. We were just trying to man those guys up and our athletes ran very well with their athletes. And they have some really good athletes.”
