No. 7 Mountaineers improve to 5-0 by defeating Marshall, 1-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Jordyn Wilson’s goal in the 50th minute allowed No. 7 West Virginia to extend their perfect start to the season by defeating Marshall, 1-0 in front of a crowd of 1,365 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The match was the centerpiece of Alumni Weekend for the WVU women’s soccer team, celebrating the 30th season of the program.

“I got to kiss more babies, I saw teenagers, it was like I was at a big Italian wedding and I was the happiest mama of them all,” said WVU head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “These alumni that came back built this place. They left their hearts on this field. It was just an incredible weekend. Exhausting, because I wanted to get every bit of them in, but I am so grateful all of them came back and were part of this tonight.”

After a scoreless first half, West Virginia broke the stalemate when Maya Leoni sent a cross into the box that was flicked ahead by Tyler Clyburn. Wilson smashed the shot home from close range for her first goal of the season. Wilson missed the entire 2025 season due to injury.

“Anytime a kid comes back from injury and gets on the board, it is a confidence booster. Jordyn has been working hard and she has been a student of the game. She wants to contribute and she wants to do anything she can to score. That’s her job, to create goals.”

West Virginia outshot Marshall, 25-3 and the Mountaineers held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Emma Durand made ten saves in the Marshall net.

“She had a great game,” Izzo-Brown said. “Her kicking game was great. I thought she managed the game well.”

Bailey Herfurth made one save in the WVU net.

In their 5-0 start, the Mountaineers have scored nine goals. Eight of those tallies have come in the second half.

“We’ve got to figure that out, for sure. Ten shots, eight corner kicks, I feel we had some good looks. I thought we took some bad looks in that [expected] goals that we want. We’ll continue to figure that out and how do we get on teams early.”

WVU will conclude non-conference play next Sunday when they host UConn (2-1-2). Marshall (3-2-2) will visit Bellarmine next Sunday.
