SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three people are dead after two separate accidents in South Charleston in a matter of hours.
South Charleston Police said two victims died Monday afternoon just a little after 3 p.m. when their vehicles collided on the South Charleston side of the Dunbar Toll Bridge. The deceased drivers were identified as Roy Day, 68, of Hurricane and Alison Ross, 59, of Nitro.
“The vehicle headed toward South Charleston hit the vehicle going the opposite way. The reason for that is something we are still looking into,” said Captain Andrew Gordon of the South Charleston Police Department.
Two other vehicles were also damaged in the incident, but the drivers suffered minor injuries in the secondary wreck.
Less than five hours later, police were called to a section of MacCorkle Avenue only a few hundred yards away where a child was struck by a car while crossing MacCorkle Avenue. Police said the victim, Hunter Combs, 12, of South Charleston, darted across the five lane road at the intersection with Rock Lake Drive and was struck by a passing motorist. He was dead at the scene.
“There was another child with him and there were some witnesses in the area. It’s something we are looking into, but after the juvenile ran out into the road way he was struck,” Gordon said.
Combs was a student at Dunbar Middle School.
The accident reconstruction team from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department is assisting with the investigation into both fatalities.
