MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In a rematch of last year’s Class AAAA state championship, Martinsburg avenged their title game loss to Morgantown with a 24-7 win at Pony Lewis Field.
The win leaves Martinsburg (6-0) as one of just three remaining unbeaten teams in Class AAAA, alongside George Washington and University.
“They’re extremely happy. But they understand that it is tonight and it is over with,” said Martinsburg head coach Dave Walker. “It is time to move forward. I am sure they are happy and I want them to be. But after tonight, it is time to move on to the next step.”
The Bulldogs shutout the Mohigans over the game’s final three quarters. In their 6-0 start, Martinsburg has yielded just 35 points.
“I thought we played pretty solid defensively. We made some mistakes but they have a really good football team, just like they did last year. Like I told our guys, ‘Great job or whatever but this doesn’t mean that much now’. We’ve got to continue to get better. We made a lot of mistakes tonight. Morgantown has a great program. Sean [Biser] does a great job. It was two good teams going at it.”
Martinsburg opened the game on an 8-play, 55-yard drive that was capped by a Brian Dick 8-yard touchdown pass to Boston Todd. After the teams exchanged turnovers, Morgantown evened the score late in the first quarter when Maddox Twigg scored on a 1-yard sneak.
The Bulldogs regained the lead with 1:30 to play before halftime. Andrew Bean’s 27-yard field goal gave Martinsburg a 10-7 halftime lead.
“We left some points out there that we should have capitalized on. But when you’ve got two good teams going at it, it is give-and-take and it is inches.”
The Bulldogs held their 3-point lead until the final minute of the third quarter. Dick connected with Zane Wipf on a 40-yard completion to the Mohigan 1-yard line. Dick scored on a 1-yard tote on the next play, giving Martinsburg a 16-7 advantage going to the fourth.
After the Martinsburg defense collected another stop, the Bulldogs capped their scoring when Dick and Todd connected on a 14-yard touchdown toss, their second scoring strike of the game. Dick passed for 180 yards and rushed for 109 more. Todd reeled in seven passes for 85 yards.
Leading the Martinsburg defensive effort for the was senior defensive back Ty Ricketts. He collected a fumble in the first quarter and forced a handful of negative yardage plays.
“He is one of the best defensive players we have had at Martinsburg. He doesn’t get near enough credit. He is a great player and a great young man. And he’s an even better person. I am really happy for him.”
