University of Cincinnati hiker dies in Tucker County

RED CREEK, W.Va. — State police say the body of a University of Cincinnati student who was hiking with other students in Tucker County has been located after apparently drowning.

Troopers said the body of Thomas Donnelly, 21, of Cincinnati, was found Monday afternoon near South Red Creek near its confluence with Fisher Springs Run. Donnelly and seven other members of the University of Cincinnati Mountaineering Club had been hiking in Tucker County since last Friday.

The group was trying to cross the creek in the Red Creek Trail and Fisher Springs Trail area Sunday afternoon when they encountered high water and swift currents from heavy rain, troopers said.

Donnelly lost his footing and became separated from the group. A search took place Sunday but was suspended for darkness. The body was recovered Monday at around 2 p.m.
