BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. — Police have arrested a man wanted in Kentucky after he allegedly stole several vehicles in Cabell County and led police on a chase.
Police said Hassan Adnan Assi, 35, was taken into custody on Tuesday evening. Officers said that Assi broke into several vehicles at the Huntington Mall parking lot and took off in an orange Mitsubishi Outlander. Officers said they pursued Assi but ultimately called off the chase because it was “unsafe to the public.”
The search for Assi continued, police said. Around one hour after the pursuit was halted, officers said they got a call about a theft at Academy Sports. According to police, someone in the store said that a man came in and stole car keys for a white Toyota Highlander driven by an employee.
Police said that surveillance video confirmed that the man who stole the Mitsubishi Outlander was the suspect who took the Toyota Highlander.
Officers found Assi beside Gina’s Lounge on U.S. Route 60 not long afterward, police said. They learned from Cabell County 911 dispatchers that Assi was wanted in Kentucky and had extradition warrants out of that state.
Assi was arrested for receiving or transferring stolen property, petit larceny, and being a fugitive from justice.
Assi is being held in the Western Regional Jail on $16,500 bail.
A preliminary hearing in Cabell County Magistrate Court is set for October 28 at 10:30 a.m.
