Wreck briefly shuts down busy Route 19 in Summersville

Summersville Police say a woman was flown to a distant hospital after an accident Friday evening which blocked traffic on busy U.S. Route 19.

The highway was shutdown in both directions for a period of time Friday to allow helicopters to land and transport the two injured individuals. Summersville Fire department had to remove the doors of one vehicle to get the injured victim out and onto an Air Evac Lifeteam medical helicopter. A passenger in the other vehicle was also loaded for transport when a chopper from HealthNet arrived.

Both aircraft landed and were loaded on the roadway with traffic blocked.

Police say there have been no reports of any fatalities, but they had no update on the condition of the two victims.

Police say surveillance footage from the nearby Wal-Mart showed one vehicle struck the other vehicle in the back, ceasing the second vehicle to flip over on its top.
