Builders of drug/alcohol treatment center want public feedback

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The team behind a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center in Kanawha County is inviting the public to come out and learn more about the project.

The Kanawha County Board of Education donated 50 acres of land to the T-Center. It sits right across Route 114 from Capitol High School. That has drawn some concern from the community.

T-Center Director of Development Jim Wilkerson is the Director of Development said he wants to see as many people as possible to show up for a public meeting set for Tuesday night.

“The meeting is for people just to come and learn more about what the facility is,” Wilkerson said.

The T-Center will be the first of its kind in the state, a stand alone, drug-alcohol treatment center. The program focuses on residential and medical treatment to help addicts detox and get clean for good. The typical stay for a patient would be between 28-days and six weeks.

The T-Center team is hoping as many people as possible turn out for Tuesday’s meeting being held at the Clubhouse at Coonskin Park starting at 6:30 p.m. Wilkerson said most people won’t even know the facility is there once it’s built.

“The T-Center itself will be a very private, very minimal activity there. I think sometimes people need to take a look at the facility to see how and where things will be built on that property and give them an idea of what we’re planning.”

Wilkerson stressed the patients will not be interacting with the public. Once they are admitted, they will be in a very intense program that requires they be on campus at all times. Meanwhile, the public won’t be allowed past the gate without permission to protect the privacy of the patients.

Wilkerson said this is a treatment program West Virginia desperately needs and he’s hopeful the public will agree.

“Drugs and alcohol, substance abuse in this state, we’re in a crisis mode. For people who are really looking and seeking support and recovery, this is a tremendous opportunity,” according to Wilkerson.

The T-Center will also include a family resource center for counseling and education.
