CHARLESTON, W.Va. — An elderly Charleston woman was identified as the victim of a crash into the Elk River.
Peggy Jarrett, 80 of Charleston was at the wheel of the vehicle that entered the water just off Westmoreland Drive on Thursday, police said. Witnesses told investigators Jarret sped through an intersection, crossed a parking lot, and went straight into the river.
The car, with her body inside, was finally recovered from the cold water after divers spent four hours searching Wednesday afternoon.
As the investigation into the crash continued, police gave no indication what might have caused the accident.
