Congressional delegation approves of Trump energy order

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., as well as Rep. David McKinley, R-W.Va., have come out in support of President Donald Trump’s executive order to move forward with the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.

In a statement, the White House said Trump is fulfilling a campaign promise in approving Keystone XL, adding it “would create tens of thousands of jobs for American workers” and make the United States more energy independent.

Keystone XL would be used to transport heavy crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. It was rejected in 2015 by then-President Barack Obama over environmental concerns.

“As I’ve said before, we must address the critical issues of moving America toward energy independence, while continuing to foster job growth and economic prosperity,” Manchin said in a statement. “Multiple studies have shown that the Keystone XL pipeline is a job creator and would limit our dependence on foreign oil and transported oil in the most environmentally-friendly way possible.”

Trump also directed federal agencies to accelerate reviews of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. The pipeline was the center of protests last year because the pipeline is planned to be routed under a lake near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation in North Dakota. Some have raised concern that if the pipe were to leak, water sources could be polluted.

“I have long said that we must invest in the critical infrastructure needed to fuel our economy, protect energy security and get Americans back to work,” Capito said.

Capito has been a strong advocate for Keystone XL; one of her first actions as senator was co-sponsoring the Keystone XL Pipeline Act.

“The action taken today by President Trump and his team underscore just how committed they are to keeping energy costs low for working families while putting more Americans back to work, and I applaud them for their leadership on this issue,” McKinley said.

Another executive order signed by Trump includes directing the Secretary of Commerce to develop a plan where all pipelines constructed in the United States are built with American-produced materials.
