KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — Drowning is the suspected cause of death for a teenager in Kanawha County.
Emergency officials said the body of the teen, age 17, was recovered from the Elk River late Thursday night hours after he was last seen going under the water near Queen Shoals.
At the time, the boy was swimming with friends, according to witnesses.
Authorities were notified around 7:30 p.m.
WSAZ Television reported crews from the Charleston Fire Department and South Charleston Fire Department assisted members of the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department in a rescue effort that became a recovery mission.
Those first responders described the Elk River as “murky” with a fast-moving current following this week’s storms.
