Maryland teen dead after drowning in Potomac River

WILLIAMSPORT, Md. — An 18 year-old is dead after authorities say he drowned in the Potomac River.

Multiple emergency crews from Washington County, Maryland responded to an area of the river near Williamsport at around 3 Tuesday afternoon. A dive team from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

Berkeley County is across the river from Washington County.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as Jovawn Burns of Hagerstown, Maryland. Burns’ body was recovered at around 5:20 pm near where he disappeared.

A friend of the victim, Paul Sisler, told The Herald Mail Burns was fishing with him and others on a dam when he fell into the river.

Burns’ body has been sent to the Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore.
