Lottery officials looking to propose credit card use for traditional tickets

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Credit cards could soon be allowed to be used in purchases of traditional daily lottery tickets.

State Lottery Director John Myers said officials are going to make a proposal to state lawmakers in the upcoming regular legislative session that begins next month.

The proposal will ask to allow credit cards to be used in some lottery item purchases.

“People have moved away from carrying cash,” state Lottery Director John Myers told MetroNews. “People just carry cards today and I am guilty myself. I carry a credit card and very little cash anymore.”

Myers said they have to be careful with the rules and regulations. The lottery does not want the credit to be unlimited, creating financial issues for players.

He told MetroNews that the lottery could be a small limit on a credit card purchase of “around $25.”

Lottery players are currently allowed to use debit cards but Myers said that is not a popular transaction because of fees.

He hinted at the lottery reviewing all transaction types and fees in the upcoming year.

“You can use one now,” Myers said of debit cards. “I don’t think there are very many folks that do it thought. There are transaction fees that go with it.

“It’s something we are going to take a hard look at moving forward. How we do credit and debit and how those transaction fees affect the sale.”

The 60-day regular session begins Jan. 8.
