Fire destroys Nitro storage units

NITRO, W.Va. — An empty storage unit building was destroyed in a Sunday afternoon fire in Nitro.

The blaze broke out on state Route 25/1st Avenue at around 2:30 p.m. The one-story structure contained several empty storage stalls.

Kanawha County Emergency Management Director and Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman said the two-alarm fire required some extra help.

“Heavy fire was showing when Nitro Fire Department got here. They had a pretty serious fire,” Sigman said.

An excavator was called in after the blaze was put out to tear down the what was left of the units.

There was no early word on what caused the fire.

Nitro’s fire department was joined by crews from Institute, St. Albans, West Side, Teays, Poca and Tornado.
