The Mountaineers filled their fourth and final scholarship vacancy for the 2010 class with the signing of 6-10 Kevin Noreen of Minneapolis last week. The Mountaineers will have at least four scholarships to give for the 2011 class as well.
News of the latest verbal committment for that 2011 class came during the extended July 4th weekend as 6-5, 205 pound combo guard Aaron Brown gave the Mountaineers the nod over Florida, Temple and Rutgers.
By all accounts, Brown is a player who has improved as a scorer. Brown became more adept at taking the ball to the basket from the wing position as he averaged just under 19 points per game last season as a junior.
And Brown is a winner. He has played for coach Clyde Jones at Penn Wood High School team in eastern Pennsylvania. Penn Wood has played in the PIAA Class AAAA championship game two consecutive years, winning one.
Brown began getting scholarship offers early during his junior season. The Mountaineers offered during the Pennsylvania state playoffs in March. Brown says it came down to a choice of staying home and playing at nearby Temple, or taking the challenge of playing in the best college basketball conference in America.
“I think, for me, it was a personal thing,” Brown told the Delaware County Daily Times Monday. “I wanted to go where I could feel like I was challenged every day. For playing time, to start, everything. I think Coach Jones has always told me to go where I was capable of playing and I think I am Coach Huggy’s type of player."
