Shinnston police chief fired

The longtime police chief in Shinnston was abruptly fired Wednesday, City Manager Debra Herndon announced.

Herndon issued a press release Wednesday saying Michael Secreto had been “relieved of his position,” effective immediately.

Information given to city administration on Jan. 16 has led to an investigation of Secreto and his firing, Herndon said.  She did not elaborate on the specifics of the investigation.

“No further comment can be made regarding the nature of the information received as disclosure could jeopardize an ongoing investigation,” Herndon said.

Last Thursday, city officials placed Secreto on suspension.  On Tuesday, city council members were informed of the situation during an emergency meeting, according to Herndon.

Secreto first joined the Shinnston Police Department in 1993.  He had served as chief since 2001.

Lt. Jason Carlson has been named acting police chief, Herndon said.
