KENNA, W.Va. — Students, parents and educators cut the ribbon on an interactive playground at Kenna Elementary School last week. The cost for phase one of the outdoor learning environment added up to $200,000. That money was provided through the Jackson County Board of Education and various grants.
“(We’ve) made it really incorporate into the curricular aspects of the building as well as provide movement and physical fitness and activity for our students,” explained Jackson County Superintendent of Schools Blaine Hess.
He said they wanted to give kids a place to blow off some steam and learn at the same time.
“When you’re confined in the classroom, learning in the classroom, sometimes your mind just needs a break and to move. That’s what this playground is designed for,” Hess said.
The superintendent explained one of the best areas on the playground is for pre-K students.
“In our early learning areas, there are things to try and develop our student’s imagination, sand tables and water tables. We have exercise areas with tricycles and bikes,” said Hess.
Phase two, three and four will add more learning opportunities for older students such as an outdoor science lab as well as art and music stations.
Kenna Elementary opened to students for the first time back in August. Parents, teachers and community members have spent countless hours preparing the ground and installing the equipment for Thursday’s ribbon cutting.
“This playground has just been a fantastic example of what can happen when an entire community puts its efforts to supporting our students,” said the superintendent.
The playground is also for community use. It’s open after school hours to the public.
