MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Two WVU fraternities were suspended Monday amid an investigation by the Morgantown Fire Department.
According to the Office of Student Activities, Kappa Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha reportedly violated the city’s fire code on occupancy limits.
A Kappa Alpha member was cited for obstruction after allegedly threatening a fire official and encouraging others to form a human chain around the front entry A member of both fraternities was cited with an overcrowding charge.
WVU Dean of Students Corey Farris said the behavior resulted in a quick response.
“That kind of inexcusable behavior will not be tolerated,” Farris said in a release from the university. “And students found in violation of the law will be subject to discipline under our student code of conduct. As we have said, we are committed to a culture change on this campus.”
Just last week, WVU lifted its moratorium on Greek activities for fraternities and sororities that had met university requirements under a new Greek Community Improvement plan.
The plan followed the moratorium put in place in November after a WVU fraternity pledge died following a “big-little” initiation event. His blood alcohol level at the time of his death was more than six times the legal limit for driving.
