Road crews in Charleston make progress after Monday’s storm

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Road crews in Charleston are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel after Monday’s winter storm that covered most of the Mountain State.

City of Charleston Public Works Director Gary Taylor said they’re making progress on the road clean up.

“Yesterday our drivers were out there just going through the motions. We couldn’t do anything with it just due to the snow and the way it was falling,” said Taylor, “Today my drivers are telling me that they feel like they’re accomplishing something.”

Taylor said even with Tuesday’s continued cold temperatures, the salt was more effective on the roads than it was the day before. The city purchased a chemical additive salt that will allow it work at a lower temperature than the standard.

“We’re starting to work on some of the feeder streets on the hills,” he said, “We’re just watching the weather. We’re going to keep people on 12 hour shifts probably here through the weekend.”

More snow is in the forecast for Wednesday with lasting bitter cold temperatures throughout the state.
