Boone County Courthouse advances in basement flood cleanup

MADISON, W.Va. — Cleanup continued Wednesday at the Boone County Courthouse following a water line break from the courthouse’s boiler that caused a flooding in their basement Saturday.

The courthouse closed and relocated some offices on Monday due to minor damages. The basement floor collected more than two feet of water. Wet carpets were disposed along with minimal paperwork, but no county records were destroyed.

Courthouse Administrator Jim Gore said they have been working to receive damage estimates this week. Gore said maintenance crews fixed the boiler by replacing necessary parts.

He said their next task is to install new flooring. They will replace the carpet with tile, so cleanup time could be more efficient in case the same incident were to occur.

“It’s been a real challenge,” said Gore, “With the assessor’s office, it was laminate flooring. We had to take that up because it had a pad under it that got wet, so we had to displace one office full of people. They found other places in the courthouse to set up their desks and their computers.”

Gore said he appreciated all the help they continued to receive. He said they were aided by the state and the Madison Fire Department during the cleanup process throughout the week. The courthouse’s insurance company is expected to assess the damages Wednesday.
