High School Football

big – Big – BIG Games This Weekend!

As we enter week number five (week #5 already??) of the high school football season you will have a number of very important and very BIG games to choose from and there are several in each class!  Before we take a look ahead at those games, you might find it interesting to know we still have 27 teams unbeaten and 23 teams that have failed to win a game so far.  To break down the classes, there are 6 undefeated teams in Class AAA and 10 teams that are without a win.  In Class AA, 10 teams have yet to lose a game while there are 8 teams that have failed to win a game.  In Class A, the numbers are similar with 11 teams yet to lose and only 5 teams without a win. Another interesting note when it comes to numbers; all three classes combined through the first four weeks of the season have scored 9,761 points and have given up 3,403.  Which class has scored the most points?  That would be Class AA as those 40 teams have combined to score 3,399!  Class A, with 38 teams,  is very close behind having scored 3,381 and Class AAA and their 38 teams have put 2,981 points on the board.  So, which Class has given up the fewest amount of points through week #4?  That would be the big schools division as Class AAA has allowed 977 points, with Class A giving up 1,193 and Class AA 1,233!  What does all of that mean?  Nothing!!  I just like math when I was in school!

Now, how about some of those BIG games I mentioned coming up this weekend?  In Class AAA, the Brooke Bruins proved they are ready to play big boy football when they knocked off previously unbeaten Hurricane last week 28-27.  This Friday night, the Bruins will welcome rival Wheeling Park and the Patriots undefeated record!  Also in Class AAA, high scoring Cabell Midland, who is outscoring their opponents 47-8 so far this season, will travel to South Charleston to battle the Black Eagles.  South Charleston is currently 2-2 and still has some very tough opposition left on the schedule so a win by the Black Eagles would certainly help their playoff position.  The Capital Cougars will welcome the Hurricane Redskins to University of Charleston Stadium and both teams have one loss on the season.  Hurricane will be looking to bounce back from that heart breaking loss last week at Brooke.  Maybe the best game in Class AAA this weekend will find the undefeated Mohigans of Morgantown traveling to the Eastern Panhandle to battle the twice beaten Martinsburg Bulldogs.  Last season Morgantown lost a close 30-26 decision to Martinsburg and would love to hand the Bulldogs their 3rd loss of 2015.  In Class AA, the undefeated Bluefield Beavers will travel to Fairlea, WV to battle Class AAA Greenbrier East.  While the Spartans only sport a 2-2 record, they have an explosive offense that is led by senior running back Zayvion Lawson who helped his team put 82 points on the scoreboard a couple of weeks ago.  Also in Class AA, undefeated Lincoln will face a tough battle when they travel to South Harrison to take on the undefeated Class A Hawks!  Another great match-up in Class AA, finds undefeated Tolsia playing host to Class A power and undefeated Tug Valley.  In addition to those two Class A teams that will be playing two undefeated teams in Class AA, the game of the week regardless of class will take place in Wheeling as the undefeated Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central will take on the undefeated Blue Eagles of Magnolia.  As mentioned, there are a lot of big, big games this weekend so make sure you find a team to support and take in a high school football game this Friday night.

And, don’t forget after the games, tune in to GAMENIGHT where you will hear all of the scores from all of the games.  If you can’t find the program on the radio, you can always listen and watch the live video stream at wvmetronews.com.

Talk to you Friday night!
