Man killed in Charleston shooting; 4th violent death in West Side neighborhood in 3 weeks

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man was shot and killed on Charleston’s West Side at a few minutes after noon Thursday.

Nate Chaney, 22, was shot in the head, police said. He was pronounced dead less than two hours later.

Residents reported hearing the shots around 12:15 at Littlepage Terrace Apartments in the 1700 block of West Washington Street.

“There were several shots fired. We’re not exactly sure how many the bullet wounds the victim has until the autopsy has been completed,” said Charleston Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper.

The death marks the fourth shooting death in less than three weeks on the West Side. Police have made arrests in the other three investigations. Cooper said this incident isn’t related to the others.

“I believe there is no connection to the previous three homicides, all three of which have had charges filed against all the suspects,” he said.

Cooper said the incident was almost certainly drug related, and because the shooting was in broad daylight, it was lucky that no one else was hurt.

“Anytime that there’s a shooting in the middle of the day, it’s more sensational and there’s more risk of collateral damage or innocent people being harmed. Fortunately in this case no one else was,” said Cooper.

A neighborhood watch meeting was planned at Stonewall Jackson Middle School on the West Side Thursday evening.
