New charges against Berkeley County man accused of burning infant

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Hedgesville man faces new charges after a baby police say he burned died over the weekend.

Michael McKinley, 29, was charged with death of a child by a parent or guardian and remains jailed at the Eastern Regional Jail on $270,000.

The Journal reports McKinley was originally charged with child gross neglect with serious injury after a 14-month old boy suffered burns to 95 percent of his body.

Police say McKinley was drunk at the time of the incident and told troopers he was giving the child a bath when he noticed him turning red and not crying.

Police continued that McKinley drained the bathtub and ran cold water over the child.

The child was taken to the hospital Thursday after McKinley’s girlfriend returned to the residence.

The incident was reported to police after she was involved in a motor vehicle collision

Emergency medical personnel on the scene of the accident told police they were unsure if the child would survive a flight to a burn unit in Washington D.C., according to court records.
