MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – A former Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputy will serve two years in jail for the assault and battery of his wife.

A Berkeley County judge suspended five years of jail time when sentencing Robert Lippman, 44, on Tuesday.

Lippman had faced up to seven years in jail after he entered an Alford plea in February to two counts of domestic assault and six counts of domestic battery in the case.

Berkeley County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Tim Helman recommended jail time for Lippman due to the severity of the abuse.

Lippman allegedly beat his wife on multiple occasions and jammed the tip of his gun into her chest.

Lippman was employed by the sheriff’s department from August 2006 until he resigned in May 2015.
