Men charged in death of WVU student set for trial

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. — The trial for two men charged in the fatal shooting of a Jefferson County man last year are begins Monday.

Ryan Mumaw was a junior at WVU when he was killed.

Malakye Boyd, 18, and Rakeem Newman, 21, face murder and other charges stemming from the July 2016 shooting of Ryan Mumaw, 21. Mumaw was a WVU student at the time of his death.

Jury selection began Friday for Boyd and Newman.

Two co-defendants in the case have already accepted plea deals.

Tayjuhn Coble, 19, of Ranson, and Braden Fitzgerald, 18, of Charles Town, each pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree robbery.

Charges of murder and conspiracy are to be dismissed as part of the plea, but both will be required to testify against Newman and Boyd this week.

The four men allegedly planned to rob Mumaw of one pound of marijuana during a drug sale in the Tuscawilla Hills subdivision.

One of the defendants fired three gunshots, killing Mumaw.
