Officer recovering after off duty shooting

HINTON, W.Va. — State Police say a Summers County man is jailed and three victims are recovering from a weekend shooting incident. The investigation continues into the incident from late Friday night at a home just outside of Alderson in Summers County.

“A group of individuals were riding a UTV and they went to turn around in Mr. Tolliver’s driveway,” said Senior Trooper Nicholas Boothe. “While they were turning around, they were fired upon by Mr. Tolliver. ”

Frederick Tolliver, 66, of Alderson is charged with five counts of attempted murder and three counts of malicious wounding after the incident. He’s in the Southern Regional Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash bond.

“There were approximately eight shots fired and we had three people wounded,” said Boothe.

The wounded included McCaden “Mac” Brackenrich, an off duty Alderson Police officer. He suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and upper torso according to Boothe. He is in critical condition at the Charleston Area Medical Center.

“He had a rough night last night,” said Alderson Police Chief Jeremy Bennett. “He’s got a long road ahead of him.”

The other two victims on the UTV were Timothy Smith who suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and Shannon Earhart who suffered a superficial wound to the shoulder from the jacket of one of the bullets.

A run in earlier int the evening may have been tied to the incident and according to Boothe remains under investigation.

“Earlier in the evening there had been some sort of altercation between the elderly man and some of those involved with the UTV and somebody threw a beer bottle at a truck,” Boothe explained. “But other than that, there were no physical threats of physical violence made from anyone toward either party.”

The investigation continues according to Boothe and there is some evidence of alcohol involved in the incident, but he said the matter is still under investigation.
