One of six charged in deadly 2016 Fairmont home invasion stands trial

Oscar Champan is one of several accused in a deadly home invasion in Fairmont in Nov. 2016.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — One of six people accused of murder in a 2016 home invasion in Fairmont that lead to the death of a Detroit-man is facing a jury this week.

Oscar Chapman, 29, is facing a first degree murder charge in connection to the Nov. 17, 2016 death of Malcolm Whitted. Chapman was the sixth person arrested and charged with murder in that case, found in Delaware just before Christmas 2016.

A home invasion on Watson Avenue turned deadly when 27-year-old Malcolm Whitted of Detroit, Michigan was found shot to death. Three people are accused of forcing their way into the residence while two others waited outside.

The other four charged with murder are:

  • Michelle Kay Belton, 38, of Elkins
  • Devon Stephens, 26, of Fairmont
  • Cassie Lambert
  • John Anthony Deahl, 26

Timothy Lambert, 31, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge last May.

A seventh person, Vanny Jermaine Clay, is charged with first degree robbery in connection to the crime.
