Charleston shooting deaths ruled homicide

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police now say a man and woman found dead in a house in North Charleston Wednesday were murder victims.

Kenneth Campbell, 50, and Jenni Chesney, 47, both of 3921 West Washington Street, were shot and killed in their apartment in a large house near the municipal line that separates Charleston and Dunbar.

“An acquaintance came into the house and saw them. He wasn’t sure what happened, but he knew they appeared to be dead,” said Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper said. “It was called in as a drug overdose, but when police arrived they discovered it was not a drug overdose, there were gunshot wounds.”

Detectives didn’t know for a while if Campbell were the victims of a murder-suicide if a double murder. Police announced at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday the deaths were by homicide. No arrests have made.

A dog was also found shot dead at the scene.
