Bridges scores 26 as Fairmont Senior takes opener, 77-58 over Wyoming East

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Jalen Bridges scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as Fairmont Senior pulled away from Wyoming East 77-58 in the season opener for both teams.

Bridges took just three shots from the floor in the first half but he sparked a pair of 10-0 runs in the third quarter to propel the Polar Bears to a comfortable victory. Zyon Dobbs added 22 points. Both Dobbs and Bridges hold multiple Division 1 offers. Bridges announced prior to the season that he intends to reclassify for the class of 2020. WVU has offered him a scholarship.

Mcquade Canada led four Wyoming East players in double figures with 17 points. Evan Preece scored 13, Jacob Bishop added 11 and Chase York chipped in with 10.

Wyoming East trailed by just seven points at the half and the Warriors remained within single-digits of the Polar Bears until the early stages of the third quarter. A 15-3 run for West in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

“We want to close the game out better with some of our guys understanding there are expectations when you go in the game,” said Fairmont Senior head coach David Retton. “For the first game, I am very happy with what we did out there.”

The Polar Bears will host Winfield Saturday while the Warriors will meet Robert C. Byrd.
