I-81 shut down for hours after tractor trailer hits guardrail, spills fuel

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Traffic on I-81 through Berkeley County came to a halt during the early commuting hours after a tractor trailer struck a guardrail then spilled fuel.

The crash was first reported at around 6:30 Wednesday morning at the 8 mile marker northbound. Traffic was stop-and-go for most of the day from the crash scene into Virginia.

Berkeley County’s Office of Emergency Services confirmed a HAZMAT team responded to the scene due to spilled fuel from the tractor trailer.

No injuries have been reported. The area of the crash is a construction zone.

Traffic was detoured off of I-81 via exit 8 (Tabler Station Road). WV511 reported the scene as clear at around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.
