Brown nets 31 as GW returns to state tourney with 74-72 win at Beckley

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Bunky Brown scored a game-high 31 points as defending state champion George Washington claimed a Class AAA Region 3 championship with a 74-72 win at Woodrow Wilson.

George Washington (20-5) earned the No. 3 seed in the state tournament, and will face No. 6 Cabell Midland on March 14th in the quarterfinal round.

Bryce Radford led Woodrow Wilson (18-7) with 26 points. With his first basket of the game, Radford passed the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Danny Bickey added 13 points for Woodrow Wilson, and Micah Hancock chipped in with 11.

The Patriots scored the first nine points of the game and led 19-10 after the first quarter. Woodrow Wilson trimmed the deficit to 38-35 at halftime, before going on a 16-2 run in the third quarter to take a 55-48 lead.

GW responded in the fourth quarter by going on a 17-2 run. The Flying Eagles crept within two points on two occasions but the Patriots held on..

“There are not two better guards than Bryce (Radford) and Bick (Danny Bickey) in the state,” said GW coach Rick Greene. “Those two kids have represented Woodrow Wilson well, the state well. It is an honor to play against them and I feel bad for them.”

Gus Eddy scored 15 points for the Patriots.

“It is always humbling to be able to go to the state tournament. And especially to go the route we had to go it is really humbling. We are just really grateful and fortunate to go back.” Greene said.
