Welch mayor dies unexpectedly

WELCH, W.Va. — The mayor of Welch died Thursday, after being hospitalized earlier in the week.

Reba Honaker

Local officials said Mayor Reba Honaker was admitted to the hospital Monday, after she fell and broke her hip. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Honaker was appointed as mayor of Welch in 2011, following the passing of Mayor Martha Moore, and later was elected and re-elected to the position.

Honaker was a lifelong McDowell County resident, and previously worked as a teacher in McDowell County Schools until her retirement.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the family.
