Tight knit Morgan County celebrating bicentennial with birthday weekend

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — It will be a year-long celebration 200 years in the making.

Situated in the Eastern Panhandle, Morgan County was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley counties. It was named in honor of Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan.

At a population of roughly 17,000, according to the 2010 US Census, Morgan County remains tight knit and full of community pride.

Morgan County Bicentennial

To kick off a year of celebration, Bicentennial Co-chair Jeanne Mozier is putting the finishing touches on a Sunday event at the Morgan County Courthouse.

“We decided to start it off with a birthday party on the actual date that Morgan County was created 200 years ago,” Mozier told MetroNews affiliates WEPM and WCST. “Because when you’re 200, you want to celebrate!”

Sunday’s event will be held from 2-4 pm at the Morgan County Courthouse on Fairfax Street in Berkeley Springs.

“They can expect cake, beverages, souvenirs on sale, balloons and decorations,” Mozier said. “Lots of people can talk about what’s going to be happening during the months to come.”

Steve French, Eastern Panhandle author and historian, will be among those taking part in year-long activities. For this sort of big events they decided to hire an expert just like this corporate event planner DC.

“Steve French is going to be doing two of our lectures, one on railroads and one on the Civil War. So we have a lecture a month starting in March and running through the end of the year.”
