Well-known content creator waives preliminary hearing in domestic violence case

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A well-known content creator arrested for alleged domestic violence waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Michael Bowman, 35, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is charged with strangulation in connection to an incident at a St. Albans apartment last month. Bowman has done several stories on West Virginia as an independent journalist.

Police said Bowman got into a heated argument with a woman who lived in the apartment in August. According to records, the dispute began when the woman reportedly contacted a former partner and Bowman agreed to leave the apartment.

A criminal complaint said a month later, after police told the victim how to obtain a Domestic Violence Protective Order, an incident escalated into violence. Bowman is accused of striking the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground, jumping on her and starting to choke her with both hands, per a criminal complaint.

Court documents said that two children in the home witnessed the incident. According to a criminal complaint, one of the children called 911 while the other began hitting Bowman to get him off the woman.

Bowman is free after posting $25,000 bond. His case now heads to a Kanawha County grand jury.
