April 2027 trial date set in Kanawha County murder case

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A man charged in shooting and killing his estranged wife last year in Kanawha County has a new trial date.

Jason Phillips (KCSD)

Jason Phillips, 47, appeared before Kanawha County Circuit Judge Tera Salango Wednesday for a status hearing.

Phillips’ attorney made a motion to continue the scheduled Dec. 7 trial because a psychological exam and report have not yet been completed.

Judge Salango set a new trial date of April 19.

Phillips is charged with shooting and killing Joanna Phillips, 46, at her Sissonville residence last December 20. He called Metro 911 to report the shooting. Phillips said his wife had pushed him to his limit.

Jason Phillips had been charged with domestic battery against his wife in the months before the shooting. He allegedly attacked Joanna Phillips, striking her several times. He was free on personal recognize bond at the time of the shooting and had been ordered not to have any contact, direct or indirect, with his wife.

Phillips remains in the South Central Regional Jail. Salango has scheduled a pretrial hearing for April 1.
