6 WVU students identified following recent Morgantown parties

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Six West Virginia University students face sanctions under the institution’s Student Code of Conduct following parties held last weekend near the Morgantown campus.

University officials have been looking into reports of students not wearing face coverings or practicing social guidelines to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The first reported incident of failing to comply with campus rules will result in probation as well as a class regarding the coronavirus pandemic. A second reported incident will result in a student taking part in a disciplinary hearing and possible suspension or expulsion.

“I want to acknowledge that the majority of our students are doing the right things and taking the proper precautions. I want to personally thank you for demonstrating our Mountaineer Values and respecting each other. I appreciate that you are modeling the values of our University,” Dean of Students Corey Farris said Thursday in a letter to the community.

“And for those students who think not wearing a mask one day or going to one party won’t make a difference, I can assure you that one decision can and will affect each of us.”

Farris encouraged reporting violations through the university’s online reporting portal or by contacting University Police.

Students are required to complete a COVID-19 education module or test before Saturday or they will face a penalty. Classes at the Morgantown campus are scheduled to start Aug. 26.
