CHARLESTON, W.Va. — County clerks and officials on Monday began canvasses of last week’s election with some efforts not slated to finish until later this week.
Monongalia County is the story of a completed count; officials reported provisional and absentee ballots did not change any of the local election winners.
Monongalia County Clerk Carye Blaney told MetroNews affiliate WAJR-AM the most common issue involved voter registration and people voting in the wrong county.
“They are from another county and are here for work, and they stop at one of our precincts thinking they can vote,” she said.
Blaney added people who cast provisional ballots will be notified so they can properly register for the next election.
“Hopefully, they can take advantage of registering online using the online voter registration system or by the regular mail system, so can get properly registered for the next election in two years,” she said.
Canvassing efforts in Berkeley County will not be completed until Thursday.
Darrell Shull, the county’s director of elections and chief deputy clerk, said canvassers will review around 50 returned ballots regarding matching signatures.
Workers will also be counting two precincts that were randomly chosen.
The Wood County canvass was halted because Wood County Commissioners Jimmy Colombo and Bob Tebay were feeling ill. The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reported Monday that Commission President Blair Crouch continued reviewing provisional ballots.
