Thirteen counties red on latest DHHR COVID-19 tracking map; ten additional virus deaths confirmed

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The number of West Virginia counties determined to be red for “substantial” coronavirus transmission grew to 13 on the daily County Alert System Map from the state Department of Health and Human Resources released on Friday morning.

Those red counties were Berkeley, Mineral, Grant, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall, Barbour, Wood, Wirt, Nicholas, Wyoming, Mason and Wayne.

Under alternatives metrics, either the average infection rate or percent positively, 49 counties were red.

The Friday DHHR report included the additions of 1,147 new cases bringing the total number of active cases, known cases, to 17,716 statewide.

Ten additional deaths were confirmed with DHHR: a Hardy County woman, 53, a Lewis County woman, 72, a Marshall County man, 64, a Kanawha County man, 55, a Berkeley County man, 65, a Mingo County woman, 82, a Brooke County man, 89, two Putnam County women, ages 95 and 85, and an Ohio County woman, 94.

The number of people hospitalized was up to 632, a new pandemic high.

Of those patients, 169 were in intensive care and 92 on ventilators.

Overall, the daily virus infection rate was 5.37 percent while the cumulative rate was 3.76 percent.

Free testing events continued statewide on Friday.
