CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — A federal judge has postponed the sentencing hearing of the former nursing assistant who killed at least eight veterans at the Clarksburg VA Medical Center.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Kleeh filed an order Friday postponing the sentencing of Reta Mays to May 11-12. It had been set for Feb. 18-19. It will be held in Clarksburg Federal Court.
Mays, 46, pleaded guilty last July to seven counts of murder along with another count of assault with attempt to murder in connection with the deaths of eight veterans who were given unprescribed doses of insulin.
Mays had access to each patient’s room as a nursing assistant on floor 3A at the hospital.

The defense filed a motion Dec. 15 asking Kleeh to postpone the hearing. The motion cited the impact COVID-19 was having on the defense team. The defense also said it’s not convinced it has received all of the past military and other records concerning May from the federal government.
The Veterans Administration reopened 3A earlier this week following a month safety stand down where it said it focused on training procedures and staffing.
