WVU student arrested following sledding incident

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown police have arrested a West Virginia University student after a police cruiser was struck by a laundry cart being used as a sled.

Police went to 3rd Street around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday following complaints of people sledding down the street. According to police, 18-year-old Joshua Scott Beard was coming down the street in a laundry cart. Officers had parked their vehicle near Grant Avenue to keep vehicles from traveling through the intersection.

Social media video from the scene shows Beard falling out of the cart and continuing to slide down the street while the cart strikes the front of the police cruiser.

Officers approached Beard, who fled on foot but was later caught.

Beard has been charged with fleeing from an officer, disorderly conduct, injury or destruction of property, playing in streets, and underage possession of alcohol.

Officers issued another person a citation for an open container violation.
