BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — WVU senior golfer Mark Goetz pulled away from the field in the final round of the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club en route to a 12-shot victory. Goetz finished the 54-hole event at 12-under.
For the third consecutive year, the Mountaineers claimed the team championship, finishing with a team total of 7-under.
“Mark had an amazing round today,” WVU head coach Sean Covich said. “The rough was like the U.S. Open with really tough conditions. He has been our leader all year. I kept telling him he’s going to win a tournament. To do it at home is pretty special.”
Goetz carded a bogey-free final round of 65 (7-under) and was the only player to finish the event under par. WVU’s Jackson Davenport tied for seventh place at 5-over. The Mountaineers finished a dozen shots ahead of Southern Mississippi. Georgia Southern, who started a pair of West Virginia natives, finished third. Bridgeport native Mason Williams tied for eleventh place.
