Alliant Techsystems fined for environmental violations at Keyser lab

KEYSER, W.Va. — An aerospace company has agreed to pay a $350,000 fine for several alleged environmental violations at a Keyser laboratory.

Alliant Techsystems operates the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory under a lease with the U.S. Navy, in which the company manufactures products including fuel rocket motors, explosive warheads and solid fuels.

The company was cited for violated hazardous waste storage and treatment rules, as well as water discharge requirements.

In addition to the penalty, Alliant Techsystems must also ensure it will fully comply with state and federal environmental requirements, which includes obtaining West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection approval on proposed changes to the facility’s waste analysis plan and permit modifications.
