Capito wins re-election to third U.S. Senate term; Moore and Miller keep seats

Incumbent U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito has won re-election, MetroNews and other media outlets have determined.

Congressional incumbents Carol Miller and Riley Moore, both Republicans, also will retain the seats they currently hold.

Capito got early and influential endorsements from President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance.

“I focused a lot on my relationship with the voters, the fact that I listen. I’m home all the time. I I think I have a personal touch with many many folks. I try to take care of not just small issues but large issues. And I think that I built up trust over these years,” Capito said during MetroNews election night coverage.

Rachel Fetty Anderson, the Democratic challenger, is an attorney and former Morgantown council member.

Constitution Party candidate S. Marshall Wilson is a former state delegate. Rio Phillips, who lost the Democratic primary, ran as a write-in candidate for Senate.

Thirty-three of the 100 U.S. Senate seats are up for election, and another two seats are up for special election. Democrats hold 13 of the seats up for election, and Republicans hold 22.

Heading to election day, Republicans have a 53-45 majority in the Senate.

“I’m like everybody, kind of glued to the TV, looking nationally,” Capito said on election night.

“It’s very close. It’s close in Florida. It seems as though you know it’s it’s not going to be a Republican year. It could be a much bluer year.”

Capito is the 4th-ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate and has the position of chair of the Republican Policy Committee.

Capito first assumed office in the Senate on Jan. 3, 2015. Her current term ends on Jan. 3, 2027.

“I’ve been honored to serve my native West Virginia in the U.S. Senate and I think I’m at a point where I not only have listened and put into effect a lot of good things for West Virginia, like our miners’ benefits and other things, but I think our state needs dedicated, proven, conservative leadership,” Capito said last week on MetroNews Talkline.

“Again, I chair committees, I’m in the on the leadership team, and I think I have a good sense of where West Virginia wants to go, and I think I’ve been very helpful through my appropriations and other things to be able to increase West Virginia’s power in Washington, and that’s important to me.”

Prior to serving in the Senate, Capito was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2015 and a member of the West Virginia House of Representatives from 1997 to 2001.

On Talkline, Capito was not ready to look ahead to whether she would run again in the future.

“Well, nobody has a crystal ball, so I you know, as I’ve learned from my dad, I got to deal with the one right in front of me, and and we’ll see what the future would bring,” she said.

Moore, who represents the northern counties in West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, assumed office on Jan. 3, 2025.

Before being elected to Congress, Moore served as the state treasurer and, before that, as a delegate from Jefferson County.

Ace Parsi was the Democratic challenger to Moore.

“It’s been a great campaign. It’s been a great cycle, and I do want to point something out here — is that my opponent, Ace Parsi, ran a very good campaign,” Moore said on MetroNews’ election night coverage.

“He ran a very good campaign, and I think it’s important to point out that he also raised more money than all the other Democrats running for federal office combined. He worked very hard, and he’s got a lot to be proud of in this.”

Miller, who represents West Virginia’s 1st Congressional District, assumed office on Jan. 3, 2023. She served in the West Virginia House of Delegates for 12 years.

The Democratic challenger to Miller was Vince George. She also faced Constitution Party candidate Belinda Fox-Spencer.
