WVU Medicine announces Fairmont hospital expansion plan

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — WVU Medicine has announced a multi-phase plan to expand the former Fairmont Regional Medical Center location, which is now a campus of Ruby Memorial Hospital.

The Fairmont hospital’s previous operator, Alecto, closed the facility in March 2020. WVU Medicine officials agreed to use the hospital as an emergency department, which included an original 10 beds, on-site imaging and laboratory services.

WVU Medicine President and CEO Albert Wright said the plan is aimed at increasing services and improving the hospital system’s reach.

“Over the next year, we’ll start to add clinics. We’ve got a clinic space upstairs with 10 or 11 exam rooms. We’re doing stress tests and things up there,” he said. “We will add a neurologist. There are three or four other specialties we’ll be adding.”

The plan also includes increasing the number of beds from 42 to 80 in addition to renovating operating and procedure rooms.

“I think a lot of those people will come from Ruby, but technically they could come from any hospital,” Wright said.

“One of the things along with great schools that folks want to have when they move to a community is great healthcare,” he added. “That’s one thing WVU Medicine can help control.”
